How does an oxygen concentrator work?
Air in general is made up of 80 percent nitrogen and 20 percent oxygen. In simple terms, an oxygen concentrator purifies the air it intakes, into pure oxygen which the patient can breath in through a mask. The purified air that the patient breaths in consists of 90 to 95 percent pure oxygen and 5 to 10 percent nitrogen. Sieve beds and filters in the oxygen concentrator help remove nitrogen from the surrounding air, which results in pure oxygen suitable for intake through a mask or nasal cannula. The machine works by compression and it has an in-built cooling mechanism that keeps it from overheating.
